History
In 1989, the Putney Central School counselor and principal gathered a group of concerned Putney citizens. They looked at some concerns that were showing up on the school’s doorstep, and were getting in the way of students educational experience-even though these concerns weren’t directly educational in nature.
Kids were coming to school hungry, without proper clothing, or stressed from family conflict. Some parents were like-wise feeling the effects ofstruggling with basics like food, shelter and clothing and other family issues like employment, money, housing, lack of preparedness as a parent ,child care when the kids weren’t in school.
After that first meeting, the group continued to meet and plan how they might try and support the school, the families and students by addressing some of these needs. Out of that group, Putney Family Services was born.
Since 1989, we continue to serve our community with programs at the school and in the community. At PCS, PFS offers after school child care, enrichment programs, mentor apprenticeships and summer enrichment.
For the whole community, we also offer, the Thursday Night Free health Clinic and Crisis Support and Referral. We are also the contact agency for the Town of Putney’s White Whitney Emergency Fund. If you, or someone you know might need a little bit of financial help to pay for heat, electricity of another small bill to get you through a rough patch, call PFS for an application. 802-387-2120
